Leaving Naples we caught a flight from Fort Myers to Chicago. After a very long layover, we caught a late overnight flight to Paris, arriving about noon. Through immigration and though our bags were among the last to unload, they arrived. Then, we walked and walked some more to get to the Air France check-in area and back through French immigration. Lots more walking and then waiting for our flight to Tunis, which was almost two hours late. Finally, we arrived at the Tunis airport to go through immigration one more time and get our luggage, which again was among the last to unload, but it arrived. And, about now you are wondering what idiot set up this itinerary? Well, that would be me as I wanted to use all my American Airlines miles as they are depreciating faster than a new car!
Once arrived, however, we were greeted by a driver from the Four Seasons Hotel Tunis to take us to the hotel, which is beautiful. The Four Seasons is located in an area called Gammath, a suburb of Tunis located right on the Mediterranean Sea. The picture below is from our room, and the second picture is of the lobby.
The first day of exploring included touring Carthage, which was founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC, destroyed in 146 BC by the Romans and then rebuilt by these same Romans, the small town of Sidi Bousaid and the Medina of Tunis.
This last picture is from the Medina in Tunis. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The Medina contains hundreds of palaces, mosques, etc. With its labyrinth within its walls, getting lost would be easy. As you might guess, we stayed right on the coattails of our guide!
Following this full day we retreated to the hotel and had dinner at the BLU Bar & Grill right by the Mediterranean Sea. Tomorrow is another full day of touring.
