“Heading out on the highway, looking for adventure in whatever comes our way. . ..”
With our car FULLY loaded, we began our cross-country trip with our first stop being Tallahassee. Although not the most likely of places to visit, it is, after all, the capital of Florida. Plus, being about a seven-hour drive from Naples, it makes a good stopping point. However, Tallahassee pleasantly surprises as it exudes a southern charm with Spanish moss hanging from the trees, including in the downtown capital complex. I would note that Spanish moss is neither moss nor Spanish (it is a bromeliad and native to the moister areas of the southern U.S., along with other areas of the Western hemisphere). An added plus is that, unlike our U.S. Capitol, the Old Florida Capitol is open and free to be visited by the public.
Tallahassee’s focus is government with lots of association offices and, of course, attorneys. Fortunately, that also brings good restaurants near the capital complex. However, even the government’s reach could not control the weather, so, we found ourselves on an outdoor patio (fortunately covered) when the heavens opened up with accompanying thunder with decibel levels that threatened our hearing.
This was Steve’s first visit to Tallahassee but my second. I was fortunate some years ago to receive an invitation to Rick Scott’s gubernatorial inauguration. I met Rick while participating in the Greater Naples Leadership program, and, over time, we became somewhat acquainted. When he told me that he was going to run for governor, I, of course, was hoping I would receive an invitation to the inauguration, assuming, of course, that he won. Well, he won, and, an invitation came in the mail. Knowing that this was a one-time opportunity, I hopped in my car and drove to Tallahassee for all the festivities.
Leaving Tallahassee and the stately halls of government, it was on to the Florida coast and the beaches. We drove the coast from Carrabelle to Miramar Beach, which constitutes the “Hidden Coast” and the “Emerald Coast.”
With a direct beachfront view, Steve spent some time just enjoying the view. Although an overcast day, the shades of the water changed throughout the afternoon and evening providing an everchanging palette. Tomorrow brings another day and another destination.
As always I love evert minute of the trip. looking forward to the continuation of the adventure. So much like the information and the photos, they complete the picture !
